The story of Laboratoires Bailleul began in 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, with the meeting of a pharmacist, Jean BAILLEUL, and a doctor, Alphonse BIGOU. This meeting led to the creation of Laboratoires.
After the armistice was signed, Jean BAILLEUL worked in a pharmacy, while Alphonse BIGOU was a general practitioner. Passionate about research, he became a pupil of Lucie RANDOIN, General Secretary of the Société Scientifique d'Hygiène Alimentaire and the second woman to join the Académie de Médecine after Marie CURIE.
Lucie RANDOIN and Alphonse BIGOU then collaborated on the study of cystine and its applications in dermatology.
L-cystine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is a stable oxidized form of cysteine. It is an essential component of hair and nail keratin. It plays a major role in hair growth.
The enthusiasm generated by these discoveries was one of the determining factors that led these two friends to create Laboratoires Bailleul in 1949.
